As all wildgardeners know, there are several species of Black-Eyed Susan among our native flowers. The most common roadside one is a biennial named Rudbeckia hirta.
But this one is unique. Growing only from 2 to 5 ft. (Some are much taller.) R. subtomentosa has beautiful golden flowers like the others, but the blooms also have a sweet scent of anise. That's why another common name for this Rudbeckia is "Sweet Coneflower." It's a wonderful plant for a wild garden collection.
